I don’t get it? Why would I say, “Ma ele sfarim?” Or, “Ma ele matslemot?” Why would I ask someone, “What these book?” Or, “What these cameras?”

Could I not just say, “Ele sfarim?” Or, “Ele matslemot?” These books? or These cameras? Why ask a question to something other than a person?
